Worksop 14 - 8 Ashfield
Worksop started the New Year with a much needed and well deserved win against local rivals Ashfield.
From the kick off Ashfield tried to use their bigger pack to batter their way through the home sides defence but a sustained period saw the visitors make only marginal in roads. It wasn’t until Ashfield spun the ball down their backline that they gained any real yards. A slick move enabled the visiting centre to cut through Worksop’s defence but an excellent chase and tackle by Andy Waddell halted the only real dangerous attack from Ashfield. It didn’t take long for Worksop to put together an attack of their own when a loose ball was collected in the home sides 22 by youngster Matt Nunn who’s pace saw him round one defender and then pass to winger Brian Sayle who outpaced his opposite man and then leave the rest of the would be defenders in his wake for a certain try.
The home supporters danced up and down on the touchline celebrating the impending try, this excitement was short lived though because as Sayle powered his way to the line he lost his footing, stumbled and fell 20 yards short in what can only be described as a “Devon Loch” moment. The visitors defence regrouped and cleared their lines. It didn’t take long for Worksop to get on the score board though as the referee awarded the home side a penalty try halfway through the first half. Waddell converted to make the half time score 7 – 0.
More of the same was the call from Captain Kev McGuire, another 40 minutes of strong defence and excellent scrumaging should be enough to see the home side through.
From the restart Ashfield attacked quickly and they were awarded a penalty just inside the Worksop half. Taking it quickly the visiting scrum half scampered down the touchline to score an unconverted try. This set back only spurred the home team on, and 5 minutes later they were camped on Ashfield’s try line. As Worksop sucked in more and more of Ashfield’s defenders they quickly shipped the ball out into open play where they had a 3 man overlap. As the ball reached Paul Roome all he had to do was pass the ball on to the two supporting players but instead he decided to use his bulk and go for the points himself. After a last gasp tackle from the last Ashfield defender Roome managed to wriggle over and spare his blushes and nearly blowing a great scoring opportunity. Waddell converted.
The only other points of the half came when Ashfield kicked a penalty to bring them to within 6 points, but strong defence and great work ethic saw Worksop secure their 1st points of the year.
