Worksop 2nd XV 7 - 34 Derby Vets

Worksop had to call out the old guard for this rearranged league fixture. With the first team having priority Worksop needed all the help they could muster, this was duly answered by the arrival of Ian Evans, Jamie Waddell and Robert Ebbs. With no recognisable scrum half or centres available Worksop versatile pack took up the challenge with regular No8 C Barnett playing scrum half and two second rowers J Williams and N Spillane playing centres.

The game was going to be extremely hard as derby had brought a well drilled team and this showed from the whistle. With Worksop still coming to grips with their new positions it wasn’t long before Derby was on the score sheet and they did it with two quick tries. As the game went on Worksop started playing good rugby and were rewarded with a well worked try when a short line out move was called and a rolling maul was set up. With Worksop pack averaging 20 stone the line was easily crossed when new recruit Waddell crossed over.

Worksop 24 - 6 Boston

With Worksop narrowly missing out on taking the scalp of the league leaders Ashby last week confidence seemed quite high despite still being in a relegation situation. The reason for this was that some of the consistency in play that produced a league winning team last season was starting to reform, and not a moment too late. As on this sunny and quite mild winters day Worksop were to play host to Boston who also were in the dreaded relegation area with 1 point above Worksop, but the hosts having a game in hand.

This meant if Worksop won today they climbed out of the relegation area by a point and still maintaining the game in hand, plus the chance of catching Mellish and Southwell both placed just two points above in the league.
