1st XV v Leesbrooke - 21st February 2009 - Match Report

Worksop 1st XV 15 - 3 Leesbrooke

Worksop were in a confident mood on Saturday when they took on second from the bottom Leesbrooke. The visitors however were in a determined mood and pushed Worksop all the way.

From the kick off the hosts applied all the early pressure but a combination of silly penalties and strong defence from Leesbrooke kept the score at 0-0. Worksop were now starting to get frustrated and started to play some very sloppy rugby. At half time the score was 3-0 to Worksop thanks to the boot of A Waddell.

After a very stern half time talk from stand in skipper G Smith Worksop started to play some better rugby but it was the away side which scored next when they levelled the score with a penalty.

Saturday 14th February 2009

With Melbourne hot on Worksop's heels, only two points behind, and Worksop playing third-placed Rolls Royce, a win was essential to maintain the promotional run.

Arriving late at the Derby ground was not the right way to start the day, and key open-side flanker Justin Poxon was missing for this game, replaced by powerhouse Guy Wilkinson.

Although the visitors were rushed on to the pitch with no real warm up, the Worksop team talk was brief and motivational from stand-in captain Gary Smith, and it was obvious the side were up for this fixture.

Rolls Royce kicked off and wished they never had, when the ball was collected by the big Worksop pack that smashed through the home defence to create all the time in the world for Kyle Billam to score a quick try, converted by Andy Waddell.
